Explain Everything - 2nd Grade Animal Report Lesson Plan
Second-graders at Parkview Elementary School in Plymouth have published their own online research books about animals.
The students began by doing an individual research project on an animal of their choice. They learned how to use a table of contents and an index of a non-fiction book to find information.
Students also used electronic resources such as PebbleGo, a new online encyclopedia the Parkview library recently purchased. They enjoyed watching video clips of their animals on PebbleGo, and liked that the text could be read out loud to them, for better understanding. Using their research, students wrote a paragraph about their animal.
Students then worked with a partner to research a new animal, so that they could create an online e-books of animal facts like those on PebbleGo. Using non-fiction books and an iPad app called Explain Everything, students wrote about their animal, took pictures and created a diagram of their animal's special features.
When the books were complete, students recorded their information to publish their e-books online. The finished books can be viewed at http://parkviewlibrary.weebly.com/2nd-grade-projects.html.
